Measures against climate change, responsible consumption and production and gender equality. These are only three of the seventeen sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 and its vision of a better and more sustainable future for everyone. The important part the economy and other stakeholders play in this development was stressed by Robert Skinner, director of the United Nations Office for Partnerships (UNOP) at the beginning of a press conference on 16th December 2019. The reason for the event at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York is the cooperation between the Texpertise Network of Messe Frankfurt, UN Conscious Fashion Campaign and the UNOP which aims at strengthening public awareness for the 17 goals and win new supporters.
Karry Bannigan, initiator of the Conscious Fashion Campaign, pointed out that more contributors were needed like Messe Frankfurt, which proactively champion change in the industry to ensure that the 17 goals can be reached in the next ten years. Interactive information points, panel discussions and guided trade show tours will be part of Messe Frankfurt’s future efforts to highlight and promote the sustainable goals at its more than 50 textile events. Lucie Brigham, COO of UNOP, for instance, will hold a keynote speech at the opening press conference of Heimtextil on 7th January 2020. Next to Zachary Angelini, Environmental Stewardship Manager at Timberland, Alexander Gege, Manager Sustainable Business Development at Otto Group, and Harold Weghorst, Global Vice President Marketing at Lenzing AG, Lucie Brigham will be part of the panel “SDGs X Fashion – The UN’s Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action”. The panel discussion will be integrated into Neonyt’s international conference Fashionsustain during Berlin Fashion Week from 14th to 16th January 2020.
