No poverty, clean water, responsible consumption: The 17 Sustainable Development Goals, to which all 193 Member States of the United Nations have committed, came into force on 1 January 2016. Three years later, the Messe Frankfurt Texpertise Network went into partnership with the Conscious Fashion Campaign and the United Nations Office for Partnerships in order to integrate the SDGs in each of the Network's 58 textile events and drive transformation in the industry. The Decade of Action began in 2020: All SGDs are to be achieved by 2030. The Network is therefore introducing new measures now.
Virtual exhibitions and discussion panels: Throughout December, the virtual event 'Discover the SDGs' will enable stakeholders to network and discuss the SDGs. The panels will include Member of the Executive Board Detlef Braun and Thimo Schwenzfeier, Director Marketing Communications Textiles and Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt. Registration is open to all and free of charge.
With its new agenda, Frankfurt Fashion Week is positioning itself as future-orientated and sustainable. In early December, Conscious Fashion Campaign was announced as the presenting partner of Frankfurt Fashion Week. The SDGs will be a prerequisite for all exhibitors at Frankfurt Fashion Week by 2023. The highlight of the Fashion Week from 5–9 July 2021 will be the Frankfurt Fashion SDG Summit by CFC, which aims to motivate the international community to achieve greater sustainability.
Sustainability communication is also being enhanced internally. Online seminars on a range of topics will provide information about the Network's goals, initiatives and partnerships to employees worldwide. Annemarie Hou, Acting Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Partnerships: "This is a critical time to accelerate partnerships to address the world's biggest challenges – from eliminating poverty, hunger and inequalities to reversing climate change and unsustainable consumption and production practices."
