How can the concept of the circular economy be made more accessible, appealing and tangible for customers? At a time when sustainability is a key factor, how can shopping centres change the whole shopping experience to involve and activate customers? In what ways could European production capacities be mapped for sustainable nearshoring, small-batch production and short delivery times? These questions were asked by the challenge hosts Bikini Berlin, Otto Group and the EU project TCBL during the third Thinkathon, which took place on 14 and 15 January 2019.
And they found the answers in innovative solutions, ranging from business strategies in the form of a members’ programme and community platforms to a fashion clinic and interactive shopping mall tours down to concepts for an online platform and a “shortruns agency”. The two teams working on the Otto Group’s challenge developed a points system as a customer incentive that rewards circular activities. The “Bikini Fashion Clinic” concept for concept shopping mall Bikini Berlin involves alterations and repairs, recycling and upcycling services, as well as family-friendly workshops and events. The business strategies for TCBL optimise communication between designers and producers to make small-scale production more profitable and feasible.
In just 48 hours, 40 international experts in six multidisciplinary teams put their thinking caps on to work on the challenges set by the industry. In the form of a video, excerpts of the workshop results were then presented on the Fashionsustain conference stage to an international audience of professionals. On behalf of Messe Frankfurt, the Thinkathon is organised by Sourcebook twice a year and is a part of Neonyt, the global hub for fashion, sustainability and innovation.
