Sustainability in every fibre – change is afoot

Where conventional retailers met sustainable brands, and international organisations and politicians met innovators: the summer instalment of Neonyt showed what the future holds for the fashion world. From 2-4 July 2019, Neonyt made sustainability the focus of Berlin Fashion Week and Kraftwerk Berlin became the global hub for fashion, sustainability and innovation once again.

Worldwide demonstrations for climate protection, protests against the exploitation of the planet, demands for sustainable alternatives and ecological solutions – a global movement is underway, and change is palpable in our society. This was also evident at the summer edition of Neonyt (2-4 July 2019). “Ten years after Neonyt’s predecessor Greenshowroom was initiated, the industry is on the verge of a breakthrough and change is within reach. Over the years, we have increased the awareness and acceptance of sustainable fashion in Berlin and, with Neonyt, turned it into a topic that is making Berlin Fashion Week stand out worldwide as a pioneering platform when it comes to sustainability,” said Olaf Schmidt, Vice President of Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt.

This week, the most important players of the future-oriented fashion industry met up with representatives from retail, industry and politics at Kraftwerk Berlin. Encouraging a dialogue and knowledge transfer, they joined forces to discuss solutions for more sustainability in the fashion world. The focus of this edition was on the topics of retail, digitalisation, denim and the conservation of resources. With this exciting accompanying line-up, Neonyt also managed to address many conventional retailers and make them enthusiastic about sustainable fashion. An important step towards establishing sustainable fashion on the mass market and moving in the direction of a future-proof fashion industry.

This is also one of the goals of the United Nations Office for Partnerships, which was represented with the Conscious Fashion Campaign and presented the UN’s Agenda for Sustainable Development (Sustainable Development Goals) within the context of Berlin Fashion Week. And at its own stand, Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) was also on hand to answer questions about the Grüner Knopf (Green Button), the meta sustainability standard that will be launched this September.

Visitors were also able to admire sustainable fashion on the runway of the Neonyt Fashion Show, which was part of MBFW at E-Werk Berlin and showcased sustainable looks by around 80 national and international sustainable fashion labels.

From 2-4 July 2019, 170 labels from 20 countries presented their new collections at the summer edition of Neonyt, making Kraftwerk Berlin a global hub for fashion, sustainability and innovation once again.
