High Performance, low Impact

Maximum functionality, minimum environmental impact: At the 25th Autumn Edition of Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics (25-27 September 2019), the Functional Lab is showcasing fabric innovations for sportswear, swimwear and lingerie.

June 2019

It is their affinity with nature that drives outdoor enthusiasts to push themselves to the limit. But with the escalation of the climate crisis, fears are growing that one day it will no longer be possible to experience such moments in the great outdoors. From Adidas to Patagonia, the activewear and outdoor industry is therefore currently making huge efforts to develop solutions to tackle the environmental crisis. The success of running shoes made of recycled PET bottles and functional underwear made of natural fibres confirms the trend: for consumers with a highly active outdoor lifestyle, the most important product features these days are maximum functionality and minimal environmental impact. From 25-27 September 2019, the Functional Lab product area at the 25th Autumn Edition of Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics will be presenting a wide array of smart, outdoor and sportswear fabrics and innovative production technologies that meet these requirements.

According to the EU Commission’s Science Hub, over 80% of a product’s environmental impact is determined during the design phase. One exhibitor dedicated to this production step is Yalta:  the Taiwanese fabric manufacturer has developed a compostable stretch fibre from polylactic acid. And also this autumn, German coating specialist Vetex will be presenting durable seam sealing tapes that meet the demands of modern sportswear. The company’s production processes are compliant with Oeko-Tex Standard 100, solar-powered and do not produce water waste. The exhibitor’s innovative solutions are therefore not only relevant for the sports and outdoor industry: by exchanging knowledge and ideas across the industry, the current challenges can be tackled more quickly, and better products can be created.

Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics – Autumn Edition is organised by Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, the Sub-Council of Textile Industry – CCPIT and the China Home Textile Association (CHTA). The trade fair is taking place from 25-27 September 2019 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai – at the same time as Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles, Yarn Expo Spring, knitwear fair PH Value and clothing fair CHIC.
