The world is facing ecological, social and economic challenges. Greta Thunberg, Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion. Young activists and the consumer of the future are inspiring textile trends for spring and summer 2021. For more than twenty years now, the Directions Trend Committee has been offering designer and clothing experts a valuable marketing and research tool for the coming season with its Trend Guide. The most recent Trend Guide “Regeneration” will be presented at upcoming Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics from 11th to 13th March 2020.
Together with Japanese textile researcher Sachiko Inoue, New York consultants Doneger Creative Services and research agency Elementi Moda from Milan, French trend forecasting agency Nellyrodi has come up with four ground-breaking design themes. “Sobriety”, raw and poetic, is dominated by luminescent hues of white, nude and pastels. Innovative technologies allow for new colours and finishes. “Function leads fashion” is the motto of the “Preservation” trend, represented by materials like resilient cotton, linen and denim. Sunny retro trend “Spontaneity” shows what trend researchers believe is young people’s longing for a life without worries. Floral 70s prints meet picknick plaids and maritime stripes. With light purple and Curacao blue, Ikat weaving technology and Batik dyeing the fourth trend “Diversity” celebrates heterogeneity.
