Africa in focus. For some years now, African nations have become increasingly established alongside China, Bangladesh or Turkey as textile production centres. This is due in part to the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) passed in 2000 under Bill Clinton, which enables African nations to export goods such as textiles to the USA duty-free. According to Der Tagesspiegel, this created 300,000 jobs in Africa from 2002 to 2017.* 15 years on, the AGOA was recently extended for another ten years up to 2025.
What is the future of the AGOA? What is the take of US brands and the US government on the trade in textiles and apparel between the USA and Africa post 2025? Given that China is the USA’s main trade partner, how will the current trade dispute between China and the USA effect Africa and what opportunities will it present for other countries that export to the USA? These and other questions will form the focus of the supporting programme of the trade show trio Source Africa, ATF (International Apparel, Textile and Footwear trade exhibition) and CPT (China Premium Textile and Apparel), the largest textile event on the African continent. Included will be a panel discussion which will give the diverse perspectives of US buyers, the US government and African producers.
The trade shows will attract more than 300 exhibitors from 18 countries to the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 12 to 14 June 2019. In addition to the AGOA, the supporting programme will focus on the latest designs and major industry developments with trend talks, seminars, a trend forum by trend agency WGSN and 15 fashion shows. Interactive discussions and networking opportunities will provide platforms for cross-industry and interdisciplinary exchange. Following its success in 2018, the Source Africa Young Designer Competition will also promote young African designers. This year the competition has been expanded to include 20 finalists, who will showcase their designs over two days at the trade show.
