Sustainability is key

Sustainability is no longer just a social development or even a trend – in terms of protecting the future, it is a necessity. That is also the belief of the organisers behind Frankfurt Fashion Week, which explains why sustainability is one of the overarching themes of the kick-off event that, to begin with, will be taking place online from 5-9 July in the digital FFW STUDIO.

Time for a rethink – time for change. From 5-9 July 2021, Frankfurt Fashion Week will be bringing together internationally renowned experts from the worlds of fashion, politics, retail and media with one common goal: to make people aware of the huge influence that the textile and fashion industry has and show how we can all contribute to positive change. In the digital hub of Frankfurt Fashion Week, the FFW STUDIO, all aspects of the central theme of sustainability will therefore be examined from different industry perspectives. Design enthusiasts and forward-thinkers from the fashion sector can look forward to the speeches, interviews and panel discussions of the three live conferences “The New European Bauhaus – Werkstatt der Zukunft”, the “Frankfurt Fashion SDG Summit” and “Fashionsustain”.

Premiere in the FFW STUDIO: “The New European Bauhaus – Werkstatt der Zukunft” conference, initiated by the Fashion Council Germany in cooperation with Frankfurt Fashion Week, will be making its debut on Tuesday, 6 July 2021 during FFW STUDIO. Echoing its historical role model, the New European Bauhaus movement is aimed at promoting interdisciplinary, co-creative cooperation and developing ideas and projects for a sustainable Europe in order to help deliver the Green Deal. A particular highlight: the opening speech will be held by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

Keynotes, interviews and panel discussions: Firmly establishing and implementing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in the fashion and textiles sector – that is the vision of Conscious Fashion Campaign. In cooperation with the United Nations Office for Partnerships, it is presenting the first annual Frankfurt Fashion SDG Summit on Wednesday, 7 July 2021. Topics such as Sustainability by Design, Policy for the People, Climate, Oceans, Creatives for the Future and the Global Status of Fashion & Design will be presented to the audience in various formats: for example, a panel discussion with Christiane Arp (President of the German Fashion Council), Detlef Braun (CEO of Messe Frankfurt) and Claudio Marenzi (President of Pitti Uomo Firenze) will explore how fashion events can help contribute to a more responsible future.

Technology and innovation are important drivers of the industry. The successful Fashionsustain conference format of Neonyt, the global hub for fashion, sustainability and innovation, will offer a fascinating line-up spanning three full days, which will explore sustainability in the context of the circular economy, digitalisation, diversity and innovation. And in an expert panel by PwC on Tuesday, 6 July, Ullrich Hartmann, Partner PwC (Auditor, Tax Advisor, FS compliance at PWC, Viktoria Kalb (Global ESG & Sustainability Analyst & Head of EMEA ESG Research at UBS), Frank Wächter (Global Director Treasury & Insurance at PUMA SE) and Dr Andreas Wagner (Sustainable Finance Lead Commercial Banking Western Europe at HVB/Unicredit) will discuss the correlation between finances, sustainability and fashion.
